چکیده

Procalcitonin (PCT) serum concentration increases abnormally in bacteremia, severe sepsis and septic shock and was described as an inflamation-induced protein. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical application of PCT-Q test for determination procalcitonin (PCT) serum level in patients with suspected sepsis. Fifty six patients according the criteria for sepsis (ACCP/SCCM,1992) and 19 controls were included. All patients undergo the bloodculture. Body temperature, leukocyte count, C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin were determined the same day. We used commercial solid-phase immunoassay B.R.A.H.M.S. PCT-Q (B.R.A.H.M.S.Diagnostica GmbH, Henningsdorf,Germany) for semi-quantitative and rapid measurement of PCT. Predominant causes of sepsis were infections of lower respiratory tract, surgical interventions, polytrauma. The data shows in 73,6% association with bacteremia and abnormally elevated PCT serum level. The results of extremely high PCT level was obtained for 28 (50%) of patients The 17,8% of patients , clinically suspected for sepsis, has high level of PCT, but negative bloodcultures. It was found 8 (14,2%) cases with low PCT level and positive blood cultures. The routine laboratory parameters and physical examination in many cases fail to establish the diagnosis of sepsis . PCT is more specific and sensitive marker of systemic bacterial infections then acute phase protein CRP. The PCT-Q test is ease to use and its quick, validity results are important support for diagnosis of sepsis in early phase. In this way improved the diagnosis, monitoring and therapy of patients in risk.

Significance of Serum Procalcitonin Level in the Early Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis

Background: Sepsis in neonates presents itself with non-specific clinical features which makes early diagnosis difficult. However, procalcitonin (PCT) and other inflammatory markers have recently been considered as sensitive markers for the early detection of neonatal sepsis. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of PCT in the early detection of neonatal sepsis an...

Evaluation of the clinical performance of an automated procalcitonin assay for the quantitative detection of bloodstream infection.

BACKGROUND Bloodstream infection (BSI) is associated with a high mortality rate. Since the origin of infection is demonstrated in approximately 2/3rds of cases, early and established biomarkers are warranted. We evaluated the clinical performances of automated procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) assays for the quantitative detection of BSI. Analytical performance of the VIDAS(R) BR...

Procalcitonin as a Marker of Neonatal Sepsis in Intensive Care Units

Background: The appropriateness of using serum levels of procalcotonin (PCT) for early diagnosis of newborn sepsis is still controversial. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the usefulness of PCT with those of serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in the diagnosis and response to treatment of neonatal sepsis. Methods: A total of 47 ...

Sensitivity And Specificity Of Procalcitonin In Diagnosis Of Neonatal Sepsis

Background and Objective: According to the fact that neonatal infection is a challenging diagnosis field, several studies have tried to test sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests. This study was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of procalcitonin (PCT) as a single early marker of neonatal sepsis. Materials and Methods: In this study, 150 neonates admitted to NIC...

Serum procalcitonin elevation in critically ill patients at the onset of bacteremia caused by either gram negative or gram positive bacteria

BACKGROUND In the ICU, bacteremia is a life-threatening infection whose prognosis is highly dependent on early recognition and treatment with appropriate antibiotics. Procalcitonin levels have been shown to distinguish between bacteremia and noninfectious inflammatory states accurately and quickly in critically ill patients. However, we still do not know to what extent the magnitude of PCT elev...
